Go To The Birch Aquarium

When an Aquarium is perched on a cliff overlooking this amazing view, how could you not go?  This is the view from the fabulous Birch Aquarium.

It's unbelievable that it took me 28 years to visit the Birch Aquarium, especially since it is only a few miles from home!  It was definitely smaller than I expected, and it is not nearly as good as the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  It still had its highlights, like the seahorse exhibit, a shark reef, and tide pools.    The Birch Aquarium features 3,000 animals, and has an annual attendance of nearly half a million people.

There was also an important exhibit on global warming and its effects on our planet.  It was sad, and it made me realize that I need to concentrate my travels on places that probably won't be here in 30 years.

There were also some interactive areas, like pretending to swim in a shark cage, and being trapped in the mouth of a Great White.  My favorite was a green screen that allowed you to pretend to be a news anchor.

Admission tickets are only $17 for general admission, and worth a trip if you are in the La Jolla area.

Date Accomplished:  April 26th, 2010
