In America, we associate Guinea Pigs as pets. In Peru, Guinea Pigs aka Cuy are a Peruvian delicacy particularly in the Peruvian Highlands.
Guinea Pigs have several benefits as a food source, they take limited space unlike most traditional livestock, they reproduce quickly, and they are high in protein and low in fat. Several villages and families can easily raise their own guinea pig farms like the one above.
Guinea Pigs can be served boiled, roasted, and most popularly fried. My friends and I went to the world famous Astrid Y Gaston and they had two cuy options on the menu. We ordered some to try, and the guinea pig tasted surprisingly good. Because the guinea pig was fried, it tasted like fried pork skin. It's definitely not a daily meal, but I am glad I tried it.
