Schnapps are a popular drink in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It is nothing like the American version which is more syrup-like and with a higher sugar content. The Schnapps found in Austria are strong (80 proof) and come in an assortment of flavors.
When walking around Innsbruck I found a Schnapps tasting place near the city center. The walls were covered with huge tear drop glass containers filled with a variety of flavored schnapps. You are then handed small cups for free Schnapps tastings! Yes, FREE. I tried a few before settling for the peach flavor. If I had tried anymore I would have been tumbling out of the store.
They then fill up a bottle of your choosing and vacuum seal it for you. Not only was it affordable, but it would also make a great gift for friends back home.
